The Beneficial and Adverse Effects of Autophagic Response to Caloric Restriction and Fasting - PubMed
Each cell is equipped with a conserved housekeeping mechanism, known as autophagy, to recycle exhausted materials and dispose of injured organelles via lysosomal degradation. Autophagy is an early-stage cellular response to stress stimuli in both physiological and pathological situations. It is...

The effect of fasting or calorie restriction on autophagy induction: A review of the literature - PubMed
Autophagy is a lysosomal degradation process and protective housekeeping mechanism to eliminate damaged organelles, long-lived misfolded proteins and invading pathogens. Autophagy functions to recycle building blocks and energy for cellular renovation and homeostasis, allowing cells to adapt to...

Caloric restriction and resveratrol promote longevity through the Sirtuin-1-dependent induction of autophagy - PubMed
Caloric restriction and autophagy-inducing pharmacological agents can prolong lifespan in model organisms including mice, flies, and nematodes. In this study, we show that transgenic expression of Sirtuin-1 induces autophagy in human cells in vitro and in Caenorhabditis elegans in vivo. The...

The effects of caloric restriction and its mimetics in Alzheimer's disease through autophagy pathways - PubMed
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that commonly occurs among older individuals. Increasing evidence suggests that a low-caloric diet might be a promising adjuvant therapeutic strategy for slowing or preventing the pathogenesis and progression of AD through the induction of...
