Bangkok bracing for floodwaters and disease
Bangkok is bracing for floodwaters that have hit 30 provinces north of the capital, affecting 1.4 million people and claiming 34 lives. Around 4000 million cubic metres of water per second is expected to flow into the capital's Chao Phraya River which, coupled with high sea levels surging upriver, could flood parts of the city, AFP reports. More details.
Thailand’s Public Health Ministry warns flooding may lead to outbreaks of cholera, diarrhoea and typhoid, along with leptospirosis and conjunctivitis. More details.
Advice to travellers: Australians heading to Bangkok or flood-affected provinces should avoid direct contact with floodwaters, and closely follow guidelines for choosing safe food and water. We strongly advise regular hand washing or the use of antiseptic wipes, particularly before eating. Vaccinations for food and waterborne diseases such as Hepatitis A and Typhoid are often indicated fo r travel to Thailand regardless of prevailing weather conditions.
