Protests have erupted across parts of Tanzania on election day as anger mounts over what critics describe as President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s increasingly heavy-handed treatment of opposition figures.

Currently, there are widespread social-media posts and local reports of clashes in the country, with protesters attempting to block voting in some areas and allegations that a number of polling stations are being vandalized or voting disrupted.

Rights groups, opposition activists and local media say the demonstrations have been majorly provoked by a sustained crackdown, including arrests, disappearances and legal barriers, that narrowed political space ahead of the vote.

Tensions escalated after months of high-profile detentions and legal actions against senior opposition figures and parties, notably the barring of the main opposition from full participation in the campaign.

The Independent National Electoral Commission confirmed the names of the presidential hopefuls on the ballot, with INEC approving President Suluhu and a slate of other candidates, a field officially reported as 17 presidential hopefuls in total, though the exclusion and disqualification of prominent rivals has been central to the protests.

Critics say the diluted field does not amount to a meaningful challenge to the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
